Google Analytics April Fools

Like anyone, I enjoy a good April Fools prank. So this morning when I stumbled upon a well designed April Fools trick by Google, I was pleased and amused.

Like every other morning, I logged into my Google Analytics account. I check what keywords I received traffic from the previous day, what referral links were sending me traffic, etc, etc. The end of my morning routine is to check out the Real Time view, to see which fine souls were reading my content at that very moment. I was pleased to see that there were 41 viewers on my site…but something is fishy…wait a minute… At first glance, it looked like the visitors were from somewhere in the UK (which isn’t in itself out of the ordinary), but when I moused over the location, the ruse was revealed.

So apparently there are 41 individuals on the International Space Station that are viewing my site. Then I noticed that the location dot was actually moving, or orbiting, if you will. Very nice touch.

Well played, Google…well played.
