If you have a small business and welcome customers through your door, and you’re not on FourSquare, you need to pull your head out of the sand. FourSquare has a proven track record for improving foot traffic in stores. There really is no downside to adding your business on FourSquare, even if you don’t have a customer facing location. The worst that could happen is that you have a no-follow link to your site that may drive a few clicks here and there.
So how do you add your business to FourSquare? It’s surprisingly easy. Honestly, if you aren’t a start-up, your business if probably already on FourSquare.
Step 1 – Create a personal FourSquare account
You can do this from your desktop or laptop by going to https://foursquare.com/signup/join, or from your mobile device by installing the app and registering.
Step 2 – Determining if your business is already on FourSquare
Log in to your account, and head over to the search page: https://foursquare.com/search. Do a search for your business and see if it comes up. If your business is already in FourSquare’s database, skip to step 4.
Step 3 – Adding your business
OK, so your business is not in FourSquare’s database. That’s OK, FourSquare makes it really easy to add it. Just fill out the form on their add venue page: https://foursquare.com/add_venue.
Step 4 – Claim your business
Now that your business is in the FourSquare database, you still need to claim it. Make your way to your business’ page. Scroll down to the bottom and click on the text in the lower right corner that states “Do you manage this location? Click here.”
Go through the verification process. It involves verifying a phone number by receiving an automated call from FourSquare. The phone call will ask you a few questions and ask you to enter the verification code on your screen.
The final step in the verification process is either a $1 fee, or a postcard verification to the business address. The $1 fee allows you instant access to claim ownership of the business, while the postcard will take 3-4 weeks.
Once you’ve completed the verification process, you now have all FourSquare’s business tools at your disposal.
